    • Began March/April Madness Book match off! Lower school classes will be reading 2 books a day and voting on their favorite until we find the LS Favorite Book!
    • SEL with Ms. Bird
    • Special lesson learning about Taino and Carib indigenous people of the Caribbean.
  • Math
    • Created beautiful mandalas (symmetry)
    • Shape identification, parts of a circle, congruency, and practice work
    • Continued fraction review and word problems
  • English
    • Root word: fact, fec, fic
    • Claim essays - importance of textual evidence, backing our claims, drafting
  • Science
    • Food chains and webs, reading and creating them
    • Decomposers and microorganisms
    • Debate!! WHO vs WWF about the use of DDT for mosquitos that carry malaria
  • Social Studies/Global Perspectives
    • Ancient India  - achievements, religion
    • Chose project idea off choice board. They are excited for these and they range from giant maps to videos to ranked top ten lists!

              Announcements - 

Happy Eid Mubarak! The Lower School will be celebrating the breaking of the fast with our Muslim friends this Thursday at lunchtime. If you are able to donate $5 to the lunch it is appreciated, as it will help cover the costs of all items needed. Thank you for your support :)

  • Morning Meeting, wellness/personal growth
    • READING BUDDIES! 
    • Special project: to honor Women's History month and Virgin Island's history month the class researched and reported on 10 amazing women in V.I. History. The collection is now displayed along with Ms. Belardo's beautiful art. Check out the board at the end of our building, facing the road. See if you can you recognize these women of impact.
    • SEL with Ms. Bird - continuing the Middle School Prep unit. They are reviewing the interviews and putting together a quick presentation to show each other so everyone can have the information shared by teachers and Middle Schoolers.
  • Math
    • Began unit on Symmetry: lines of symmetry, order of rotational symmetry, graphing symmetry (see photos)
    • MashUp math
    • St. Patrick's day fraction review game
  • English
    • Root word: pel, puls
    • Completed two final poems and presented their favorite. They will now be made into a 6th Grade Class Poetry Book!
    • Went over the outline for designing Claim Essays. Students then chose a character from The Rock and decided on their 3 main characteristic claims about the character. Now they will begin choosing their text evidence to support each claim.
  • Science
    • Began our next unit, learning about the characteristics of living things and identifying species. They completed early work with using keys to identify species.
  • Social Studies/Global Perspectives
    • We began our journey into Ancient India! Students learned about the diverse geography and identified how it affected the people who lived there (and now). They read about the first cities and the incredible achievements they had, like plumbing!

  • Morning Meeting, wellness/personal growth
    • READING BUDDIES! 
    • Special guests! Wyatt Bracey, a graduate of GHCDS, and five of his college friends presented to the class during a special session. They spoke about the different technology aspects they study in college and the great work/study opportunities they have had so far. They were very impressive and inspirational. The 6th graders listened intently and asked some great questions.
    • SEL with Ms. Bird - continuing the Middle School Prep unit, some students were able to connect with their middle school contact for an interview. I think they were nervous as they really stuck to the scripts they created. I thought they might get into the moment and start asking all kinds of questions!
  • Math
    • Fraction work and review. 
    • Fraction Bingo and unit test
  • English
    • Completed the class read: The Rock and the River , essay project will start after the break
    • Poetry unit: list and concrete poems
    • Root word work
  • Science
    • STEM Fair visit and presentations! (photos in separate blog)
  • Social Studies/Global Perspectives
    • Egypt review and test
    • Students created GRAPES posters as final projects and presented them to help the class with a final review before the test
