  • 3/2 - STEM Fair week begins! See attached info, come see all of the projects!
  • 3/9-13 - Spring Break week, no school
  • 4/2  - No School (Conferences: I will reach out to some of you for conferences, but feel free to go ahead and contact me about scheduling one if you'd like)
  • 4/3 and 4/6  -  No School
  • 5/25 - No School

- Ask Your Child About - 

  • Morning Meeting, wellness/personal growth
    • READING BUDDIES! The class had a lot of fun joining their 2nd grade reading buddies. See attached photos :) 
    • SEL with Ms. Bird - continuing the Middle School Prep unit
  • Math
    • Fraction work: multiplying and dividing fractions plus mixed review and a few challenge problems
  • English
    • Class read: The Rock and the River , discussions and questions. We are getting through the book at a steady pace, and the students are very engaged with the story. 
    • Poetry: List and Simile Poems
    • Root word work
  • Science
    • Science Fair ...Everything! All week long there were papers being printed, cut, and glued onto boards decorated with borders and lots of color! The students are so proud and we all look forward to sharing the GHCDS STEM Fair with you. We even enjoyed a mini fair of our own :)
  • Social Studies/Global Perspectives
    • Egypt! Students have been assigned a poster project highlighting one for the GRAPES of Egypt. This is an individual project but they will present the topic as a group, which will help all review for the test next week.

- Ask Your Child About - 

  • Morning Meeting, wellness/personal growth
    • 100th day of school!!! The students made a collaborative list of the 100 things they've learned this year!
    • Continued our study of Black history by learning about Boley Rodeo and HBCUs
    • Happy Chinese New Year and Ramadan!
  • Math
    • Dice roll 100 times! Calculated the mean, mode, and range then graphed the results
    • Fraction work: creating equivalent fractions (mixed number and improper), comparing fractions, finding common denominators, adding fractions 
  • English
    • Begin class read: The Rock and the River , discussions and questions
    • Poetry: Gathered inspiration in nature for Haikus, identified language elements and perspective in poems and rewrote a poem from a different perspective
  • Science
    • Science Fair prep: completing written portions, editing
    • By now your child should have all sections of their report complete, to include: Abstract, Question, Hypothesis, Research (also might be called Introduction or Background), Materials, Procedure, Results (paragraphs and graph), Conclusion. This week will be spent making sure all report sections, including graph and photos, are printed and neatly organized on their presentation boards. Boards and borders are not generally provided. I have a few leftover borders for them to choose from, but not enough for all.
  • Social Studies/Global Perspectives
    • Egypt! Rulers/Pharaohs, Rosetta Stone, Kush Kingdom, achievements

          Announcements - 

  • 2/14 - 16 - Agriculture Fair!  Come see the great student work at our GHCDS booth!!

- Ask Your Child About - 

  • Morning Meeting, wellness/personal growth
    • The topic of leadership has come up a lot lately, and I am always looking for ways to give individuals leadership opportunities. During advisory I asked the class to share out what qualities they thought a good leader should have. They had great ideas. Later, in a lesson, they reflected and share some more about qualities of good leaders, and identified people in their lives that possess some of those qualities. They really came up with an amazing list (see pic) and they understood that you don't have to have all of those qualities to be a good leader. We will continue to have pop-up lessons about leadership as well as opportunities to lead.
    • SEL lesson - Mrs. Bird has started a series of lessons to get them thinking about, and preparing for, Middle School. They really enjoyed it so far!
  • Math
    • Making shapes using accurate measures of lines and angles, unit review, test
    • Valentines MashUp math puzzles
  • English
    • Root word work
    • Begin class read: The Rock and the River by Kekla Magoon (they DO have reading homework!).
    • Intro to poetry unit
  • Science
    • Science Fair prep: abstracts, graphing data/results, conclusions
  • Social Studies/Global Perspectives
    • Egypt! Mapping/geography, settlement, religion/afterlife, mummification, pyramids
    • Lesson on Winter Olympics - students were given a date in history, then they looked up the location of that winter Olympics, shared out some neat facts, and located their spot on the world map.
